Also referred to as ‘dream boards’, this is a great way to clarify and give life to your dreams. Oftentimes, we aren’t aware or very clear about our own dreams. Not only is it fun to allow our creativity and imagination to roam, it can work like magic! Many people report looking at their past vision boards, and discovering that many of their dreams have come true.
Here’s how to start: Cut out pictures from a magazine, or any source, that represents your ideal scene for every aspect of your life. Dream big - what’s your dream vacation, house, or job? Ask the kids what their dreams are for fun, school or even inventions. Each family member chooses and cuts out their own pictures and glues them to a poster board. Let the process be as loose and free-flowing as you can. You’ll be surprised by what you see.
I’ve seen families come up with such a variety of dreams, it’s amazing even to themselves! Pictures of castles and dragons, motorcycles, cars, vacation villas, boyfriends, girlfriends, clothes, money, wild white rapids vacations, fireworks in the backyard, and even cozy campfires with just their own family! Dreams, feelings and desires come to life on a poster board before our very eyes.
Some people cut out lots of words to describe how they feel for their boards. Others use very vibrant colors, or doodle or draw images. It really doesn’t matter what style you use, the point is you have the freedom to do it the way that is authentic to you.
When everyone is finished, each person shares the vision board they’ve made. When it’s time to share, each person gets up and shows what’s on their board and what it means to them. Encourage your kids to include how it feels to be wearing that jacket, flying that airplane, riding those rapids. That’s really where we are trying to go with this … feeling and sharing.
And no competition! It’s not a contest of who has the neatest, most orderly, or realistic board. There’s no right or wrong with vision boards. It's about visions, desires, dreams!
By making it safe for your kids to share their innermost dreams, you are opening a door of communication with your children. You will convey to your kids that you love to see them happy, no matter what their dreams are. It doesn’t matter if they are unreasonable, unaffordable, or otherwise unattainable. The goal here is to share in the joy of simply dreaming. You are establishing that this family is here to support each other and each other’s dreams.
